LaToya is the 5th of 10 children born to Joe Jackson and Katherine Jackson. Her siblings were part of the Jackson 5. Initially, she wanted to be a lawyer, but her father insisted that she take part in the entertainment business. By 1974, when she joined her brothers in the spotlight, she was tap dancing for them. That was probably their way to make their performances seem more unique. She appeared in a CBS TV show with her brothers Jackie, Tito, Marlon, Michael, and Randy. She and her sisters were dancing and also performing skits. With Joe Jackson’s management, Rebbie, LaToya, and Janet performed as a short-lived musical group.
In the 1980s, she released her own album. She wanted just her name on her album. She clearly didn’t want that affiliation with the Jacksons because her brothers were very famous and successful already. Her father wanted her to use her last name, but she ended up just using her first name because she wanted people to see her as an individual. “If You Feel the Funk” was climbing up in the R&B charts. Her second song is called “Night Time Lover.” It was produced by her brother Michael, who provided backing vocals as well. He co-wrote the song with LaToya. She provided the opening scream for “This Place Hotel,” a 1980 hit.
In 1981, she released a follow-up album, “My Special Love,” and she released 2 singles called “Stay the Night” and “I Don’t Want You to Go.” “Hearts Don’t Lie” was the third album that she released. It was her biggest Billboard chart success. In 1984, she commissioned her name to a fashion line. She also participated in the “We Are the World” song. That song was really big and it impacted the world with its lyrics. In 1987, Jack Gordon became the co-manager with Joe Jackson. Under Jack Gordon, her image became sexualized. Her mother was shocked because she always knew her daughter was conservative.
Jack Gordon, her family felt, was a bad influence on her. In 1988, she released an album called “LaToya” with the single “You’re Gonna Get Rocked.” In March 1989, she posed topless. LaToya felt like she needed to break away from her conservative household. So doing this almost felt like she was finally free. LaToya expressed that she was forced when it came to marrying Gordon. She wrote an autobiography stating that she was abused by her father, that she was physically abused, and she had to cover up her bruises. LaToya lost contact with her family because she was becoming Jack Gordon’s property.
She didn’t want to pose for the second Playboy, but Gordon abused her with threats. LaToya Jackson’s career was losing momentum, and she even had to file for bankruptcy, which is crazy to hear, especially for someone like LaToya Jackson who had a successful career in music. She released 2 albums: “From Nashville to You” and “Stop in the Name of Love.” Gordon was planning to feature her in a pornographic film, but she called her brother Randy and she managed to escape. She then ended up reuniting with her family. When it comes to what she went through in public, she was scared to perform again.
She had to build her confidence. She started to perform in Europe and in South America again. The marriage destroyed her finances; she had to pay off debts that her ex-husband had accumulated. For the 9/11 attacks, she performed “Free the World.” She was starting to come back to the music industry, and she appeared on Larry King’s show that was released March 9, 2003. At the time, it was the highest-rated show in 3 years. People were wanting to know what really happened to LaToya. The media wasn’t always clear, and it’s good to hear it from her. She released her first musical project in 6 years called “Startin’ Over.”
“Just Wanna Dance” reached number 13 on the Billboard charts. Jack Gordon died in 2005. In 2009, she appeared on Celebrity Big Brother. She is a Jackson and she has made a name for herself. It’s not surprising that people want to know more about her. In 2011, she released a memoir called “Startin’ Over.” The relationship that she was in was not easy for her. There were so many things that happened, and it affected her a lot. By writing this memoir, she could be helping a lot of people that are dealing with these types of difficulties and don’t know how to get through it.
She appeared in Celebrity Apprentice and America’s Next Top Model. In 2013, she was featured in a series called “Life with LaToya” on the Oprah Network. This gave an opportunity for viewers to really see the type of person that she is in her day-to-day life, and this was good. People really enjoyed her reality show. We got to see her reality TV show, and it was nice to see a different side to her and also with her parents. LaToya Jackson collaborated with Iranian pop star Andy on a song called “Tehran.” The last album that she released was in 1995, and it’s called “Stop in the Name of Love.”
LaToya is currently 68 years old. She is almost 70 years old. There have been talks about her appearance on Facebook, and people were talking about the fact that she is very skinny. But they don’t realize that this is someone that has been through a lot. She recently lost her brother Tito, so that’s 2 brothers gone. And also what she went through in the early 1990s was hard. She was in an abusive relationship that took a toll on her. People like to criticize others without even knowing the full story, and they are so quick to judge.
Most people wouldn’t even be able to be strong enough when it comes to dealing with what they have gone through. Dealing with public scrutiny and also being famous is a lot to deal with when you’re still young, trying to find yourself in the music industry and you’re growing up. All of the mistakes that you make will be posted and everyone will see what you have caused, and that can be a lot for some people to deal with. There are some that don’t want to deal with these types of things. They would rather not and do other things that work out in their own favor.
