Does being a celebrity mean anything?

Being a celebrity in the early 2000s meant something then it is in 2023.Social media didn’t takeover the world then. People had to meet people physically instead of making Youtube videos to try and get discovered.Furthemore , people were creating demos for labels to get a chance.Demos people would heart the voice of the artist tosee if she has talent . That has changed with Youtube , Spotify , Soundclous. And it changed the technology of music and how people consumed music. It was when music was evolving and the sound of music was changing.People were complaining about the state of music.

Celebrities in the early 200s didn’t give a lot of access to their supporters. Supporters watched their movies on their dvd or listen to their music on Cd. Also people were not sharing their day to life on Youtube , Snapchat. Information would be on Tv or in Magazines.Internet has given us a lot of information when it comes to celebrities. Twitter is an app where can give their thoughts. And sometimes it can backfire on celebrities .Furthermore, cancel culture has made it easy for celebrities to be cancelled depending. On the talent and if you’re a legend. New musicians can easily get cancelled if people go through their old tweets.

Social media has given people power that they didn’t have without it.It’s given people a voice that they didn’t have before . Marginalized people espexially in comedy have always being used as a punchline . Feminist and Activist feel like it’s harmful. Comedians have to be careful in what they say. Kevin hart and Dave chapelle have gotten backlash before.

The rise of Influencers

Influencers have changed an industry.When podcasters , Youtubers , influencers came they took over.People became less interested in traditional celebrities. India love westbrooks was one of the pioneers of influencers. She started in tumblr. People think instagram was the ones who started the wave of influencers . However , apps like Tumblr , Youtube were pioneers.They disrupted the movie and music industry. Musicians were being discovered on Youtube instead of recording demos for labels. It made it easier for musicians to become successful.They didn’t need the engine of a label to push them out there.They could create music on Yotube to an audience if they were good enough.Some are not even signing to labels. But even creating their own labels. A good example Cleo sol.

Cleo sol is a talented musician from London .Hasn’t got any recent interview on the internet and also didn’t release her first album until she was 30. Labels have got bad reputation with Artist signing bad deals and needing to negotiate or give up something to be free. Difficulty comes from taking the risk to invest yourself and saving to become  a successful musicians because it might not happen. Christina was a musician on Youtube who made covers on several musicians. Also she already had a following on Youtube . When she went on the voice did well. Had a career in music. She passed away in 2016 . May she rest in perfect peace.

What changed?

Youtube and Vine,Tik Tok  was the change.They changed what it means to be a celebrity. That why people use Influencers and Celebrity interchangeably. For the first time you can learn a skill by watching people teach you thing on the internet. People have learned how to cook , singing techniques, learn an instrument , art , etc.The minute people starting learning that when things changed. Beauty influencers were able to create a career out of foundation reviews and eye tutorials . In 2023 does same videos won’t perform well in terms of views. And now they have just stuck to Instagram reels and have their own business. Beauty influencers were invited to beauty events . Celebrities were even starting makeup line during the time that beauty influencers were popular. Celebrity main business was perfumes they have now moved on to skin care lines.

Beauty influencer have to change their content and make vlogs. And many Beauty influencers do that now. Tik tok created a whole generation of influencers. Khaby lame was reported to charge 500k for a instagram post. Tik tok gave him an opportunity to have a career online. Going to popular award shows . Making videos with messi , will smith , snoop dog.

Youtubers were making good money on the platform. They were aso starting to get more respected than traditional celebrities especially  early 2012-2016 . The shift of Youtubers going to awards shows , endorsements , book deals , clothing lines, makeup collabs. Traditional celebrities were the only one getting this deals. However , when youtubers became popular they realise that they can monetize their audience.When that happen many people felt like being a celebrity doesn’t mean much anymore. Someone can make a funny video and can become a celebrity overnight.When it was exclusive to Traditional celebrities . Only certain amount of people were allowed to become succesful.

Conclusion

Social media users feel there aren’t a lot of talented people inthe 21 century.Additionally the lack of stars in the entertainment industry has dilluted the talent . The rise of technology affected it. Furthemore , there has been a strike in the movie industry . Writers feel like they are being underpaid. Also with the rise of streaming making money isn’t as reliable anymore.Additionally Music and Film industries don’t know how to make their money back effectively.Suggestion is to strike. Effective strategy that people can take . Writers have been underpaid for long . Actors . Especially lead Actors get most of the money.

Celebrities has to be more about talent if you want it to mean something. Influencers and celebrities need to be in their own groups and spaces.Spaces that they create that cater to their needs and wants.Influencing is different then being a mega star . Together won’t work because it will dillute an industry. Furthemore , everyone doesn’t  want to be a mega star . People are just satisfied with just influecing people on what they buy.Evolving can be a good thing there is a distinction . However , in 2023 there hasn’t been a distinction . Effects an industry to crumble if people are not happy .
