Love songs are an important component of how a wedding is going to go. People have their favorites from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s. We have set up a long list from different years. 1970s
- “Let’s Stay Together” – Al Green — This song is more of a slower song. This could work well with your husband when the upbeat songs get slower. Al Green wasn’t fully sold on the song. His producer Willie Mitchell and drummer Al Jackson Jr. helped make the song number 1.
- “You Are So Beautiful” – Joe Cocker — This song is more emotional. This works well with a father-and-daughter dance. The song is co-written by Billy Preston and Bruce Fisher as well.
- “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” – Roberta Flack — This is about falling in love at first sight. This song was released during the 70s, when people had to have real-life connections in order to fall in love. Nowadays, people are meeting online. They are getting married to people they just connected with on Bumble.
- “I Won’t Last a Day Without You” – The Carpenters — This song was released twice by the Carpenters. First it was an album track, and then it became a single. Karen Carpenter’s voice leads the song.
- “Just the Way You Are” – Billy Joel — This song is about loving someone no matter what. Joel didn’t want to release this song as a single because he felt like the song was too personal. Not everyone wants their business to be in a song. However, those songs are the ones that always do well. When you’re vulnerable, your supporters can relate to you. There are people who have been together with someone for a long time — this could be the opening song for the wedding reception.
Good Times in Music
- “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” – Diana Ross — This song has gospel elements to it. When you listen to the song and vibe, a choir could turn this song magical. This song gets people up. For the wedding song list, it should be used when you want your guests to start dancing.
- “Isn’t She Lovely” – Stevie Wonder — This song was written for Stevie Wonder’s daughter, Aisha. It’s a very bright song. If you’re feeling happy, you could play this song to make you even happier. 1980s
- “Here and Now” – Luther Vandross — This song is more of a commitment song. Imagine it like taking your wedding vows — you could even have a snippet of it in your wedding song list while saying your vows. The song was almost cut from the album. We can’t imagine him not adding this song.
- “At Last” – Etta James — This song is about a long-awaited love. It’s a very romantic song. This song could be included in the wedding love song list as a cue to dance with the couple that is getting married, so that everyone could celebrate love. The song was actually released in the 1960s; however, the original writers were Mack Gordon and Harry Warren, for the 1941 musical Sun Valley Serenade.
- “Endless Love” – Diana Ross & Lionel Richie — This is a duet between two people who are very successful in the music industry. Lionel actually wrote it for a movie of the same name; however, Berry Gordy pushed for Lionel and Diana to do a duet.
Relationships
- “Time After Time” – Cyndi Lauper — This song is about a relationship growing apart with distance. There are some couples whose relationship was long-distance, and they were able to make it work because their love was very strong. However, even though it’s not quite the same as growing distance in a relationship, this song could work for couples on the wedding love songs list, as a celebration of maintaining that distance.
- “True” – Spandau Ballet — The songwriter and guitarist Gary Kemp wrote it about his secret crush on Clare Grogan. He was having a hard time expressing his feelings. The saxophone solo is one of the most sampled riffs in hip-hop history — an example being P.M. Dawn’s “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss.”
- “Always and Forever” – Heatwave — This song is about expressing your deep commitment to your partner. This person is in love and is living on clouds — they get butterflies when they see them. The song was written by Rod Temperton, who also wrote “Thriller” and “Rock with You.”
- “Faithfully” – Journey — The song is written by Jonathan Cain, and he was missing his wife while being on the road. He wrote this song on a tour bus. When you’re famous, you have to always be on the road — going on tours, doing shows. It’s hard, and it can affect relationships.
The 90s era
1990s
- I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” – Aerosmith — The song is a deep devotion song, about the fear of losing someone. The song is written by Diane Warren for the movie Armageddon. It became Aerosmith’s only ever #1 song on Billboard.
- “Wonderful Tonight” – Eric Clapton — This song is about watching a partner get ready for an evening out. Eric wrote this song while he was in a relationship with Pattie Boyd, watching her get ready for a party.
- “From This Moment On” – Shania Twain — This is a country song. If you want to change genres in your wedding songs list, this song could help bring a different vibe. It was co-written and produced by then-husband Mutt Lange.
- “I Will Always Love You” – Whitney Houston — This was originally written and recorded by Dolly Parton in 1973. Whitney’s version was released in 1992. It’s a goodbye song to her business partner.
- “Everything I Do (I Do It for You)” – Bryan Adams — The song is about a partner being their entire life, with everything centered around them. The song was written for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
- “Unchained Melody” – The Righteous Brothers — The song is originally known from a 1955 prison movie; however, it became popular in 1990 because of the movie Ghost.
- “Fields of Gold” – Sting — The song is inspired by the view of barley fields near Sting’s home in the countryside. The countryside, in our opinion, is where the true creativity lies. There are so many things you could see that you could turn into songs. Some people are always looking for something extraordinary — even Eminem talked about how he could turn the word “orange” into so many rhymes.
2000s
- “A Thousand Years” – Christina Perri — This song was written for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn soundtrack. You can imagine this song at a Cinderella ball — that scene when the prince meets Cinderella for the first time, sees what she’s wearing, and is impressed. He doesn’t say anything but just grabs her hand.
- “You and Me” – Lifehouse — Jason Wade said the song was inspired by watching a couple through a restaurant window. Restaurants are a place where people interact — people sometimes come with their friends, or sometimes a couple comes together. Couples use that time for a date, or they’re going on a date.
- “Chasing Cars” – Snow Patrol — The song became popular after being featured in the series finale of Grey’s Anatomy. Series can help make songs successful, especially if the show becomes very popular. With Grey’s Anatomy, everybody was talking about the series. Even when you look at movies like High School Musical, every song in the movie became loved by viewers.
Proposal
- “Marry Me” – Train — The song is a proposal-themed song. Pat Monahan wrote it thinking about how he was proposing to his girlfriend. This could be used as a lead-up to the engagement. When people are proposing to their partner, they don’t normally use music — but if you want to be extra romantic, this song could work very well.
- “Better Together” – Jack Johnson — This song is good for an outdoor wedding, especially for a destination wedding. Outdoor weddings have become popular on social media, especially in a hot country while saying your vows. This could also be a good song to use for that.
- “Home” – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros — The song is about finding a home in another person. This is good for a reception song. The whistling hook was improvised in the studio, and it became the song’s signature sound. The studio is a place where the best creativity takes place, especially in a room full of talented people.
- “Bless the Broken Road” – Rascal Flatts — It’s a country song leading to the path of finding “the one.” The song was co-written earlier by Marcus Hummon, who also recorded his own version before Rascal Flatts turned it into a country hit. When it comes to songs, even if it’s already been done, you could always make it better. Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” became a smash hit when Whitney did a cover of it and made it even better. When you have a vocalist like Whitney who knows how to show emotion in her music, then it’s not surprising that it will be successful.
- “Crazy Love” – Van Morrison — The song is good for when people are getting drinks and food and just vibing during the reception.
2010s
- “Marry Me” (live) / “Perfect” – Ed Sheeran — This song is about dancing in the dark with someone you love. Ed Sheeran wrote it about his girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn. He felt the song was too sappy. The songs you think are too romantic always end up doing well, because people miss that type of music — where someone is declaring their love for someone. Many people listen to music from the 80s because they feel like they can’t find music that is within their vibe today.
- “Thinking Out Loud” – Ed Sheeran — The song has Motown inspiration. When you listen to the song, you can tell how much artists like Marvin Gaye influenced his sound growing up. The song won a Grammy for Song of the Year. It featured Ed dancing with professional dancer Brittany Cherry.
- “All of Me” – John Legend — John Legend wrote it for his wife, Chrissy Teigen. It became one of the best-selling songs of all time. People love the deep meaning of the song, and even him playing the piano is the icing on the cake. It shows how much he truly loves his wife.
- “I Won’t Give Up” – Jason Mraz — It’s a song about staying committed through hard times. Jason wrote this song after witnessing a friend’s emotional reconciliation with their partner. It was a difficult time, and he recorded this song in a couple of takes. When you actually know the person, it’s different, because you can sometimes feel what they feel, and you feel for them.
Commitment
- “Say You Won’t Let Go” – James Arthur — The song reflects on falling in love and asking for lasting commitment. James wrote this song inspired by real-life wedding photos of his friends. He was imagining the story of a couple’s relationship from their first meeting to marriage.
- “Speechless” – Dan + Shay — The song is a country song. Dan wrote it as a vow to his wife before their wedding. It has become a popular addition to wedding love song lists. Country songs have a vibe that makes people want to dance in groups. It brings back memories — when you listen to country music, it reminds you of the past.
- “Best Part” – Daniel Caesar ft. H.E.R. — An R&B duo — when you have these two people collaborating together, expect to hear flawless vocals. The guitar and the vocal harmonies go well together. When you listen to Alicia Keys and Usher’s song “My Boo,” what works well is that they were singing to each other like a collaboration, so people could see the chemistry between them.
