Should I be a Songwriter?

It’s an important question to ask there, why are you trying to pursue this career to improve your writing skills though. Are you trying to pursue a career in poetry? or do you just love writing? ask yourself these questions.

1 What is your end goal when it comes to songwriting? is it a hobby or a career which one do you fit? When you decide it will structure your goal. If you’re doing this because you love it then don’t put pressure on yourself to keep writing every day. Try and do it when you can.

2 If you’re trying to do this as a Hobby make sure to have fun with it don’t take it too seriously. There is pressure in society to monetize everything. It’s not realistic, especially when what you’re doing is a hobby. Write when you feel like it, make sure that it’s fun.

3 Do you need to have a passion to be a songwriter ? not really this industry is a business. Songwriters succeed by writing hits there is a formula to it. Many upcoming songwriters don’t understand this passion isn’t enough.

4 Passion can get you the big break. However, are you able to sustain it? Babyface, Nija Charles were able to sustain it. If you can’t it will be really hard to be a trusted songwriter. No one would want to write their songs for them. You don’t have a solid catalog of hits. The hard truth is there is a lot of competition.

5 Competition is good it can fuel the fire of rejection. This is what you will face in the industry you need to be strong because it can really affect you. Remember you only need 1 song to change your life for good. 1 hit and you’re set for many jobs ahead.

6 Competition could also bring resentment. Many upcoming singers take the route of becoming songwriters before becoming Artists. If you’re not tough you would want to quit. Are you ready to work smarter? Yes, work smart, not harder. You can work hard with no results, many are not being strategic.

7 Networking is key it’s not enough to just be posting songs on youtube hoping it will catch fire won’t be good enough.
